Levante 0 – Real Madrid 0. Oof. Giants Real Madrid failed to score against newly-promoted Levante, resulting in a disappointing draw reminiscent of the merengues‘ season opener against Mallorca. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuaín were back to their early-season slump, and Levante keeper Manuel Reina managed to block the attempts of Di María, Alonso, Benzema and Pedro León. Madrid’s defence at least lived up to expectations. Levante only had three attempts on goal – none of them on target.

Athletic Bilbao 1 (Gabilondo) – Barcelona 3 (Keita, Xavi, Busquets). It was an interesting and very wet match at San Mames in Bilbao. Athletic was down a man after only half an hour, as Fernando Amorebieta was sent off for a challenge on Iniesta (although it probably didn’t merit a straight red). Barcelona’s midfield was in top form, and Seydou Keita was the first to score, shortly after the break. Xavi was the next, with a shot from outside the box. David Villa was sent off for raising an arm against Carlos Gurpegi in the 87th minute, but the match wasn’t over yet. Igor Gabilondo scored Athletic’s only goal seconds into injury time, but Sergio Busquets responded two minutes later with another goal for Barça, ending the match 3-1.

Sporting 0 – Valencia 2 (Mehmet Topal, Soldado). This was an unusual match, in that it was essentially over after only ten minutes of play. Topal and Soldado scored one after the other at the beginning of the match. Valencia had three more shots miss the target in the next ten minutes, then nothing for the rest of the match.
